22.12.2015 Experience a career in PR with a Brighter Comms placement

Public relations might be one of the fastest growing professions in the UK, but it is still part of a highly competitive industry that can be tough to enter.

Would-be recruits often find themselves caught in a ‘Catch 22’ situation – lacking experience but being told they need experience to get their foot in the door.

At Brighter Comms we believe in helping bright sparks fulfill their PR potential, which is why we only offer meaningful work experience placements.

Much like actual employment our thorough process starts with an interview and ends with a reference, and the bit in between is designed to provide a detailed insight into what a career in PR is actually like.

We won’t have you making tea or doing pointless tasks to fill time; if you are given work experience at Brighter Comms you will work closely with our multi-talented team of professionals on a range of PR-related tasks.

A learning experience

But don’t take it from us – two of our recent intake talk about their placements:

Philosophy graduate Richard Wiggins first came to Brighter for a week in October, and impressed us so much we invited him back for a month-long internship in November.

He said: “Out of the PR firms I had work experience with, Brighter was the most enjoyable. It felt fresh, fun and not too corporate.

“I was surprised at how broad and varied the work was; it was interesting to learn how there are different types of PR and how different companies have different PR needs.

“I also learnt a lot about time management and client relationships.”

Third year English literature and media student Alice Lally joined us for two weeks earlier this month.

“This was my first experience of working in a PR environment so I didn’t really know what to expect,” she said.

“I felt I got to help out with tasks that were actually useful and contributed to the business. These included writing blog posts and carrying out research for clients.

“I learnt a lot about the PR industry and the experience helped me improve my writing skills and appreciate the importance of social media to PR.”

A route to industry

As well as being a rewarding and meaningful experience in itself, a work experience placement at Brighter Comms can be a potential route into the PR industry.

Several of our placements, such as Richard, have returned for periods of paid internship, while some have even been offered jobs with us.

In fact, almost half of our current staff members initially came to Brighter on work experience placements.

And although we can’t promise a job, we can guarantee you will leave with a greater understanding of the industry and appreciation of what a career in PR is like.

You will also be provided with detailed feedback on your time with us including tips for improvement from your Brighter colleagues.

So, if you are interested in joining our team for a one-week (unpaid) placement, please send your CV to our office manager: alice.simpson@brightercomms.co.uk

Before we offer you a placement we will invite you in for an interview to get to know you better and make sure you get the most out of your experience.

We look forward to welcoming you in 2016.
