24.05.2012 Team Cake on our bike for Barnardos

Well, we’ve done it! Team Cake has successfully cycled 38 miles for Barnardos (and we’re actually still alive!).

We would like to say that we trained intensively and we were fully prepared for the day’s challenges but there just didn’t seem to be enough hours in the day so we had to make do with a few short cycles, as our ‘training’. Needless to say, when Sunday morning (the ungodly hour of  7am) came around, there were a few nervous  faces as we spotted the ‘professional cyclist’ look of some of the other participants.

However, we just remembered the hundreds of children who would benefit from everyone’s fundraising efforts. Barnardos is a great charity which helps underprivileged young people across the UK, with some very worthwhile projects operating right here in Cardiff.

Starting at the Copthorne Hotel, Culverhouse Cross, our first challenge was the infamous ‘Crack Hill.’ Our cycle then took us to Bridgend and through the Vale of Glamorgan. Thankfully, there were two ‘pit stops’ on the way and both were certainly needed! Mind you, trying to stand up after cycling 15 miles, when you’re not used to it, is certainly no easy feat!

The final part of the cycle saw us cycling through Rhoose and Wenvoe, which seemed to be full of many mini hills. By that point, we had already been cycling for around three hours. Luckily, we had remembered plenty of chocolate and energy drinks to have at the pit stops otherwise we would never have been able to make it up those hills!

Finally cycling up the last hill in Wenvoe, Team Cake saw the beacon of light, which was the Copthorne Hotel (AKA the finish line). With one last burst of energy, we pushed on to make it over the finish line in around 4 hours – a great achievement considering the lack of training! Thankfully the weather was good for us and we even saw a few rays of sunshine as we crossed the finish line.

It was a fantastic day for all and it is a great feeling to know that our fundraising efforts, which are still increasing, will make a difference to young people who really need it. Team Cake would like to say a massive thank you to all who have kindly donated sponsorship money to the worthy cause. For all those who would still like to sponsor, you can still donate online here.
